Gamers who really care about their equipment know that flat monitors do not do justice to the synthetic worlds they play in. A curved monitor makes for a much more immersive experience. Peripheral vision matters when people are engaging in battle with their friends online or against a machine. To that end, Samsung has just announced its new Samsung Odyssey Neo G9. It follows on the heels of the previous Odyssey G9 released last year. But the 2020 version, while boosting excellent picture quality, was made using an earlier version of LEDs.
The 49-inch Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 represents the industry’s first Quantum Mini LED curved gaming display. Its refresh rate is a whopping 240Hz and the response time is 1ms, critical metrics for gaming. The difference is in the light source. Quantum Mini LED technology is just 1/40th the height of ordinary LEDs, using very thin layers that pack in more lighting. This technology allows for perfect white and black levels and a 1,000,0000:1 contrast ratio. Dark areas appear darker and bright areas seem much brighter with the new LED configuration. Samsung’s monitor is also easy on the eyes — it won approval in the form of an Eye Comfort certificate from TUV Rheinland, an international organization that provides certification for monitor technology. The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 can be preordered now and will ship on August 9th.
