Open-ear earbuds usually trade isolation for awareness; Apple is narrowing that compromise. The AirPods 5 bring Active Noise Cancellation to the line’s $129 entry model, supported by a new multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ.

Apple says the redesigned system removes up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. Transparency mode renders nearby voices and sounds more naturally, while Adaptive Audio shifts between awareness and isolation as conditions change. Conversation Awareness still lowers media volume when the wearer begins speaking. Inspired by AirPods Pro 3, the acoustic redesign also aims for richer, more consistent sound across a wider range of ear shapes.

The earbuds work with Apple Intelligence for Live Translation and hands-free Siri AI, while nod and shake gestures provide discreet yes-or-no responses. Improved dust, sweat, and water resistance makes the open design better suited to commutes and training.

The $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case adds on-stem volume swipes and longer endurance: up to five hours with ANC per charge and 22 hours with the case. The case supports USB-C, Qi, and Apple Watch chargers. Both versions are available to preorder now and arrive in stores September 18.
