A small speaker rarely gets to play a convincing role in a larger home theater. The HomePod mini 2 changes that equation by allowing four of Apple’s compact speakers to operate together around a television.

The second-generation model retains the original’s rounded, fabric-wrapped form but uses an S10 chip for computational audio processing. It analyzes playback in real time to adjust loudness, dynamic range, and tonal balance. The new Sound Glow feature turns the touch-sensitive top into a light display that responds to bass, treble, and album artwork. The effect is visual rather than a replacement for the speaker’s acoustic hardware.

The bigger functional upgrade arrives when four units are paired with the latest Apple TV 4K. The system detects speaker positions and calibrates timing and levels automatically, offering a more flexible alternative to a conventional surround setup. A single unit can also serve as a Mac speaker, while stereo pairing and multiroom playback remain available. Siri AI is planned through a future software update rather than being fully available on day one. That makes this a meaningful step beyond the original HomePod mini, even if its compact dimensions remain familiar.

HomePod mini 2 costs $149 in the United States. Preorders are open in pink, green, blue, white, and midnight, with retail availability scheduled for October 30.

Siri AI features will arrive later in supported English-language markets.
