A boat shoe rarely carries its references this visibly—or this quietly. The Union x CLAE Carter Lug uses hand-braided suede and beaded leather laces to connect a familiar nautical silhouette with Union founder Chris Gibbs’ Caribbean heritage and traditions spanning the African diaspora.

Created for CLAE’s 25th anniversary, the limited-edition Carter Lug is handcrafted in Vietnam with a premium suede upper sourced from LWG-certified tanneries and a leather lining. Braiding across the vamp references the role of hair braiding in identity and storytelling, while thin square leather laces terminate in handcrafted beadwork inspired by Caribbean adornment. A woven side label bearing the historic West Indies Federation flag completes the cultural detailing without turning the shoe into a collection of applied graphics.

The structure is equally considered. Its lug outsole contains 30% natural rubber and conceals an EVA insert for flexibility and lightweight comfort. An insole made with 80% recycled PU foam adds cushioning beneath the foot. Together, those components give the boat-shoe upper more substance while preserving the ease expected from an elevated slip-on.

Silver Mink places the braided construction in sharper relief, while Triple Black makes the texture more restrained. In either finish, the collaboration succeeds because its story is carried through material and construction rather than surface branding alone.
