JJJJound Gives the New Balance 740 a New Identity

The new 740N pairs breathable mesh and nubuck with JJJJound’s restrained earth-tone palette.

The JJJJound x New Balance 740N gives a recently revived 2000s runner the treatment this partnership knows best: warm neutrals, carefully measured contrast, and almost no interest in conspicuous branding. More importantly, it introduces the 740N designation rather than simply issuing another colorway of the standard model.

The upper combines breathable beige mesh with synthetic no-sew overlays and nubuck, preserving the layered, angular construction that separates the New Balance 740 from simpler retro runners. A navy mesh lining darkens the interior, while an off-white mesh tongue and matching oval laces soften the technical silhouette. Deep red, navy, and black accents supply controlled contrast without disturbing the earthy palette associated with earlier JJJJound collaborations.

Branding remains characteristically restrained. A custom JJJJound 740 mark appears on the lateral side, but the materials and proportions do most of the work. An off-white midsole sits above a black rubber outsole, grounding the pale upper and giving the shoe the visual balance of a classic suede trainer.

Unlike the weatherproof utility of the partners’ earlier New Balance 2002R GORE-TEX, the 740N focuses on breathable everyday wear. The distinction is subtle, but the revised designation and material treatment give the project more substance than a routine palette swap.

The JJJJound x New Balance 740N launches July 30 at 9 a.m. ET exclusively through JJJJound. Pricing has not been announced.
