PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures today released the official trailer for the upcoming action-adventure motion picture, Uncharted. Fans of the critically acclaimed and best-selling series of video games will be especially excited to see Uncharted on the big screen, as it will be the prequel to the series. Starring Tom Holland as the young street-smart Nathan Drake and his snarky partner, Victor “Sully” Sullivan, played by Mark Wahlberg, the trailer shows the duo go in pursuit of “the greatest treasure never found.” The trailer doesn’t appear to be directly following any single Uncharted game, rather, it seems to be lifting elements from multiple games.
Near the opening of the trailer, we see Drake and Sully meeting for the first time in a bar. The banter that is typical of the duo in the video games is apparent immediately with the two ribbing each other about their respective ages and appearance. From here, the two embark on their globe-spanning adventures. The trailer’s focus is on how locations and treasures become lost to time as reflected in Drake’s opening statement, “There are places out there you can’t find on any map. They’re not gone, they’re just lost.” His need to find these places and recover buried treasures drive the action-packed sequences shown in the trailer. Adding to the storyline of the film, we hear mentions elsewhere in the trailer of Drake’s “lost” brother, Samuel Drake, who left Nathan one last clue.
The film’s other cast members include Sophia Taylor Ali, Tati Gabrielle, and Antonio Banderas. Ruben Fleischer, who directed Uncharted, shared that he “made the movie for both hardcore fans of the game and those who are not yet familiar with the franchise and believe that both will be equally entertained by this incredibly fun and action-packed film.” Uncharted is scheduled to open in theaters on February 18, 2022.
