In anticipation of the United States’ semiquincentennial, the U.S. Mint has unveiled a special design for the 2026 Kennedy half dollar. Dubbed ‘Enduring Liberty,’ the temporary artwork will replace the familiar profile of President John F. Kennedy for one year only. On the obverse, a close‑up rendering of the Statue of Liberty’s head and crown dominates the field, symbolizing the ideals of freedom and resilience. The reverse depicts Liberty passing her torch to the next generation, accompanied by a quote from James Madison that reads ‘A well‑informed people is the best defense of liberty.’

The Mint plans to circulate the coin nationwide and offer it to collectors in two‑roll sets and 200‑coin bags. While the core specifications – diameter, weight, and metal composition – remain consistent with previous Kennedy half dollars, the new design marks the first time in decades that another figure has appeared on the coin. The change is part of a broader commemorative program recognizing the 250th anniversary of American independence, which will also include special editions of the American Eagle and other denominations.
Collectors and everyday users alike may find the Enduring Liberty half dollar a tangible link between past and present. Its limited availability and thematic focus on civic engagement make it as much a conversation piece as currency. For numismatists, the coin offers a rare opportunity to own a mainstream U.S. circulating issue that departs from tradition.
For the general public, it may simply be a reminder of the enduring ideals that guide the republic. The coins will avilable starting May 26th, giving time for anticipation to build among those who cherish history rendered in metal.
