Independent running brand R.A.D. Sporting Goods is continuing its move beyond the CrossFit world with the introduction of the MALLOW, a heavily cushioned trainer that embraces the current appetite for high-stck running shoes without fully surrendering to the exaggerated aesthetics that dominate the category.

Named after the soft texture of a marshmallow, the MALLOW centers its identity around comfort. The shoe features a substantial 42 mm midsole stack paired with an 8 mm drop, dimensions that place it firmly within the modern maximalist running segment. Yet unlike many oversized trainers that lean aggressively futuristic, the MALLOW maintains a relatively restrained visual language. The silhouette remains clean and uncomplicated, with sculpted wave detailing along the lateral midsole adding just enough visual texture to distinguish it from the increasingly crowded field of super trainers.

Performance-wise, the formula is familiar but thoughtfully executed. An engineered mesh upper keeps the shoe lightweight and breathable, while the rocker-shaped geometry is designed to encourage a smoother transition through each stride. The combination suggests a shoe aimed less at elite race-day efficiency and more at sustained comfort over longer distances and daily mileage. The moderate 8 mm drop reinforces that positioning, keeping the ride approachable for runners who may not want the aggressively forward-leaning feel of some contemporary racing models.

R.A.D. has built much of its reputation through training footwear, particularly among functional fitness athletes, but the MALLOW signals a broader ambition. The company’s earlier UFO and SYNTH silhouettes experimented with hybrid performance concepts, whereas the MALLOW enters the increasingly competitive dedicated running category more directly. That shift reflects a wider movement within the industry, where smaller independent brands are carving out space by offering focused alternatives to the established giants rather than attempting to outscale them.

The shoe launches in both understated and more expressive colorways. Black, grey, and off-white options keep things minimal, while neon green and deep blue versions lean into the louder visual energy often associated with contemporary performance footwear. The balance feels intentional: enough personality to stand apart, but not so much that the shoe becomes difficult to wear casually.

Priced at $150, the MALLOW positions itself competitively against established premium trainers from larger brands. Select retailers will receive the shoe beginning May 21, with a wider online release following on May 28.

More than anything, the MALLOW reflects how performance running shoes are increasingly expected to function as lifestyle objects as much as athletic equipment. R.A.D. appears to understand that today’s runners often want the cushioning and geometry of a serious trainer without looking like they are perpetually headed to a marathon start line. The MALLOW threads that line with surprising restraint.
