Sony is celebrating ten years of its category-defining 1000X headphone line with something noticeably more ambitious than a cosmetic anniversary edition. The new 1000X “THE COLLEXION” takes the already capable WH-1000XM6 platform and reframes it as a luxury audio product, blending Sony’s established noise-cancelling technology with elevated materials and a more deliberate industrial design language.

At the center of the headphones is a newly developed 40mm driver featuring a unidirectional carbon-composite dome engineered for greater rigidity and lower distortion. The upgrade is intended to improve clarity across the frequency range while preserving the warm, controlled sound signature that has made the 1000X series so widely adopted among travelers and commuters. Sony pairs the driver with its DSEE Ultimate processing technology and 360 Reality Audio support, allowing compressed files to be reconstructed in real time while spatial audio formats gain additional dimensionality.

Where the standard WH-1000XM6 leans toward functional minimalism, THE COLLEXION takes a more tactile approach. Polished metal accents replace matte plastic surfaces, and the earcups are wrapped in a newly developed vegan leather material that Sony says required two years of refinement. The result is less overtly tech-focused and closer to the sort of restrained luxury typically associated with premium luggage or automotive interiors.

Importantly, Sony has resisted the temptation to overcomplicate the platform. THE COLLEXION retains the dual-processor active noise-cancelling system found in the XM6, along with the same battery performance: up to 24 hours with noise cancellation enabled and 32 hours without it. Touch-sensitive earcup controls remain intact, as does multipoint Bluetooth pairing for seamless switching between devices. A matching carrying case and gold-plated audio cable complete the package, subtly reinforcing the product’s more upscale positioning.

Priced at $649.99, THE COLLEXION sits well above the $399.99 WH-1000XM6, signaling that Sony is targeting a narrower audience—one less concerned with pure value and more interested in craftsmanship, materials, and presentation. It is a notable shift for a company that has traditionally dominated through technical performance alone.

The broader significance of THE COLLEXION may be what it suggests about the future of consumer audio. As noise cancellation and wireless connectivity become increasingly standardized across the industry, differentiation is moving toward design, tactility, and emotional appeal. Sony appears to recognize that premium headphones are no longer viewed solely as electronics. They are worn daily, displayed openly, and increasingly expected to carry the same visual and material sophistication as watches, luggage, or eyewear.
