Seiko is expanding its 5 Sports lineup with a new set of Field Series models equipped with a bi-directional compass bezel, adding practical navigation functionality to the brand’s entry-level mechanical range. Rather than introducing an entirely new collection, these watches build on the existing 5 Sports formula, pairing rugged field-watch styling with subtle tool-watch upgrades.

The stainless-steel case measures 39.4mm across and approximately 13mm thick, striking a more wearable balance compared to larger sport models. The standout addition is the compass bezel, which allows the wearer to determine direction using the position of the sun—an old-school feature that reinforces the watch’s outdoors-oriented identity. Beneath the curved Hardlex crystal sits Seiko’s in-house 4R36 automatic movement, offering hacking, hand-winding, and a 41-hour power reserve.

The dial remains clean and highly legible, with bold Arabic numerals, luminous hands, and a day-date display at 3 o’clock. Water resistance is rated at 100 meters, making the watch capable of handling everything from daily wear to light water activity. The overall design leans into classic field-watch DNA but adds just enough functionality to differentiate it within the crowded affordable mechanical space.

Seiko is offering four references—HDB006, HDB007, HDB008, and HDB009—split between utilitarian fabric straps and stainless-steel bracelets. Earth-toned dial options emphasize the outdoor theme, while the steel-bracelet variants give the watch a slightly more urban edge. All models feature a transparent caseback, revealing the movement inside.

Pricing is expected to land around the €400 range, keeping the watches firmly within Seiko’s value-driven territory. With the addition of a functional compass bezel, the 5 Sports Field Series continues to evolve without straying from its core appeal—reliable, mechanical watches with just enough character to stand out.
