Laphroaig has never been a distillery known for subtlety. Its unmistakable Islay character—defined by medicinal peat smoke, iodine, and maritime salinity—has long inspired fiercely loyal devotees and equally determined skeptics. The distillery’s latest limited release, Willem by Willem, leans into that spirit of individuality through an unlikely collaboration with actor Willem Dafoe.

Selected by Dafoe himself, the 14-year-old single malt begins its life in ex-bourbon casks before spending additional time in Oloroso sherry wood. The finishing process softens some of Laphroaig’s sharper edges, layering notes of dried fruit, baking spice, and dark sweetness over the distillery’s signature smoky backbone. Rather than relying on tasting notes or technical specifications, Dafoe reportedly approached the selection process instinctively, choosing the whisky based on personal preference rather than predetermined expectations.

That approach feels surprisingly aligned with Laphroaig’s identity. The distillery has built its reputation on producing whisky that prioritizes character over consensus, and Willem by Willem continues that tradition. Bottled at 46% ABV, the expression balances the familiar intensity of Islay peat with a richer, more rounded profile than many of the distillery’s core releases.

The presentation mirrors that restraint. A clean, understated package bearing Dafoe’s signature avoids the celebrity-branding clichés that often accompany these collaborations. Instead, the focus remains squarely on the whisky itself.

Priced at approximately €147 and initially available through Laphroaig’s Friends First ballot program, Willem by Willem is less a celebrity endorsement than a thoughtfully curated single malt. In a category increasingly crowded with limited editions and high-profile partnerships, that distinction matters.
