The a01 prioritizes portable entertainment over full mixed reality, pairing MicroOLED displays with a remarkably light chassis.

XREAL has introduced a new sub-brand called X by XREAL, abbreviated as xbx, alongside its first product: the a01 augmented-reality glasses. Instead of chasing the sprawling ambitions of full mixed-reality ecosystems, the a01 takes a more restrained and arguably more practical approach. Its purpose is straightforward: create a large, portable private display that can travel anywhere.

The glasses project the equivalent of a 147-inch virtual screen when viewed from roughly 13 feet away, positioning the device less as a futuristic computing platform and more as a personal cinema that slips into a jacket pocket. Dual MicroOLED panels deliver HDR10 visuals with peak brightness reaching 1600 nits, while onboard AI processing converts standard dynamic range content into HDR in real time to improve contrast and color depth without additional setup.

Weight reduction appears to have been a major engineering priority. At just 62 grams, the a01 uses an ultra-light nylon chassis, slimmer optical components, and redesigned hinges to reduce fatigue during longer viewing sessions. A 50-degree field of view balances immersion with peripheral awareness, making the glasses more practical for use during flights, train commutes, or shared workspaces. XREAL also integrated an anti-shake stabilization algorithm intended to smooth out visual jitter while in motion.

Unlike more ambitious headsets from Apple or Meta, the a01 intentionally avoids spatial tracking and gesture-heavy interfaces. XREAL describes the device as “zero degrees of freedom,” meaning the display remains fixed rather than anchored to a mapped environment. That limitation may sound conservative, but it also helps simplify the experience. The emphasis stays on media consumption, cloud gaming, and productivity applications rather than virtual-world experimentation.

Customization is another notable part of the package. Users can swap front frames to alter the appearance or even 3D-print their own accessories, allowing the glasses to feel less like a sealed gadget and more like wearable hardware with modular potential.

Priced from $299 in the U.S., the a01 occupies an interesting middle ground between conventional smart glasses and high-end mixed-reality headsets. In a category increasingly defined by complexity and escalating cost, XREAL’s decision to focus on portability, comfort, and display quality may prove to be the more durable strategy.
