HOKA’s Speedgoat series has spent the better part of a decade becoming the default answer to a particular question: what should a heavily cushioned trail shoe feel like when the terrain turns rough? The new Speedgoat 7 doesn’t attempt to disrupt that reputation. Instead, it sharpens the formula in subtle but meaningful ways.

At first glance, the silhouette remains familiar. The broad platform, aggressive rocker geometry, and thick slab of cushioning are all intact. But underfoot, HOKA has introduced a revised midsole compound that feels noticeably lighter and more energetic than the outgoing model. The added rebound is especially apparent on rolling terrain, where the shoe transitions more smoothly between climbs and descents without losing the planted feel that made earlier Speedgoats so dependable.

Fit was another focus area. HOKA reshaped the heel collar and tongue to lock the foot down more securely, reducing movement inside the shoe during technical sections and uneven traverses. The upper uses a breathable engineered mesh with 3D-printed overlays that add structure without making the shoe feel stiff or overly armored. It still prioritizes comfort over razor-sharp precision, but the revised fit gives the Speedgoat 7 a more composed personality on rocky terrain.

Underneath, the Vibram Megagrip outsole returns with a slightly revised lug pattern aimed at improving traction in mud and on wet surfaces. The outsole remains one of the shoe’s defining strengths, offering dependable grip across loose dirt, slick rock, and steep descents without feeling excessively harsh on fireroads or packed trails.

At 19.4 ounces per pair and priced at $165, the Speedgoat 7 continues to occupy the middle ground between maximal trail comfort and long-distance practicality. It is not the lightest shoe in HOKA’s lineup, nor the most aggressive. That restraint is precisely why the series has endured. Rather than chasing race-day minimalism or exaggerated cushioning trends, the Speedgoat remains focused on stability, comfort, and durability over long miles.

The result is a shoe that feels less like a dramatic redesign and more like a careful calibration. For trail runners, fastpackers, and hikers who already trust the Speedgoat platform, that will likely be enough.
