A camp axe earns its place by cutting wood, but its exposed head and awkward proportions make carrying one unnecessarily complicated. The Willumsen Norse Foldable approaches that problem like an oversized pocketknife, rotating the axe head into the handle for safer, flatter storage.

Designed in Copenhagen, the compact tool uses a 14C28N steel head with a 4.38-inch cutting edge, 0.15-inch thickness, and wear-resistant PVD coating. The CNC-ground blade combines a stonewashed edge with serrations along its beveled spine. Sculpted G10 scales come in Black or Forest Green, while the complete tool weighs 12.3 ounces.

The Norse measures 8.17 inches long when folded, allowing the handle to serve as its blade enclosure without a separate sheath. A ball-bearing pivot manages deployment, while a crossbar lock seats the head in line. Willumsen adds a secondary safety catch and spring tension to help retain the head in both its open and folded positions. A steel pocket clip and integrated loop provide additional carry options.
That mechanism is the defining feature. Folding an axe introduces more complexity than conventional compact camp tools, but it also addresses the exposed edge and difficult pack geometry that cause many hatchets to stay behind. Its dimensions and weight position it for splitting kindling and processing modest camp wood rather than heavy felling.
Willumsen currently lists the Norse Foldable for preorder at approximately $176, with Kickstarter pledges beginning at €95. Shipping is expected to start in late 2026, subject to the usual production and fulfillment risks associated with crowdfunding.
