Debuting as an introductory model in the new Airpeak line, the S1 is a small drone that can be equipped with Sony’s full-size mirrorless interchangeable-lens Alpha cameras. Dubbed by Sony as the “world’s smallest drone,” the company plans to launch the Sony Airpeak S1 this coming September. The Airpeak S1 is the same professional filmmaking drone the company revealed during the virtual CES presentation earlier this year. The new drone uses a proprietary motor, propeller, control system, and sensing technology, allowing it to fly at extremely high speeds with stable wind resistance.

The Sony Airpeak S1 can last an impressive 22 minutes in the air (without a payload), with up to 12 minutes of lasting power with the camera in tow. It can remain stable in winds of up to 44.7 mph and has a max operating speed of up to 55.9mph. Its stability is said to be impeccable, which is important considering it will be flying around with a camera worth thousands of dollars. Sony developed a mobile app called Airpeak Flight for the iOS and the iPadOS to serve as the drone’s remote control. It can simultaneously operate the gimbal, camera, and aircraft when in flight. The app can also be used to review images captured by the attached mirrorless camera. The drone is compatible with the Alpha 9 series, Alpha 7R series, Alpha 7S Series, the FX3, and even the Alpha 1, which is Sony’s 8K 50-megapixel flagship.
