Mount Gay is leaning into transparency with its new Exceptionally Aged Collection, a prestige series built around clearly stated age expressions from the world’s oldest continuously operating rum distillery. The inaugural release includes two limited bottles, Exceptionally Aged 15 and Exceptionally Aged 25, both distilled, aged, blended, and bottled in Barbados without added sugar or flavoring. It is a straightforward premise for a category that has not always been known for straightforward labeling: age, origin, cask type, and time in the tropics are the story.

Exceptionally Aged 15 is distilled on a single column still and matured for at least 15 years in ex-American oak bourbon casks. Bottled at 43 percent ABV, the rum opens with notes of grapefruit, banana, buttery pastry, vanilla, plum, caramel, and cinnamon. On the palate, Mount Gay lists butterscotch, vanilla, caramel, orange zest, cocoa nibs, red plum, citrus, and a light touch of sea salt. It is positioned as the more approachable of the two, but the long tropical maturation gives it more weight than the age statement alone might suggest.

Exceptionally Aged 25 goes deeper into the distillery’s archive. Distilled in 1999 under former Master Blender Jerry Edwards, the single-batch rum spent 25 years in ex-bourbon casks before current Master Blender Trudiann Branker completed the final expression. Bottled at 47 percent ABV, it brings together vanilla, red fruit, caramel, citrus, dark chocolate, raisin, cinnamon, toffee, roasted nuts, nutmeg, cocoa, and gingerbread.

The packaging keeps the Barbados connection visible, with deep ocean blues, warm cream tones, embossed wave details, and gold accents. Production is limited to 4,942 bottles of Exceptionally Aged 15 and 2,376 bottles of Exceptionally Aged 25 worldwide, priced at $90 and $199, respectively.

For collectors used to chasing limited bourbon and Scotch releases, Mount Gay’s new series makes a strong case for aged rum as a serious shelf addition.
