IWC is well-known for its expertise in calendar complications. After all, Kurt Klaus debuted his legendary perpetual calendar, which will require no manual adjustment until 2100, under their label. Though the complete calendar in the redesigned Portofino will need manual adjustment somewhat more regularly (once each month with fewer than 31 days), the beautiful complications on this 41mm timepiece are worthy of regular attention.

IWC designed the Portofino Complete Calendar 41 for quick and easy reading, which oversize-yet-not-overbearing hour markings around the dial. The sundial at the noon position displays the day of the week as well as the phase of the moon, with the lunar phase brilliantly illustrated in a small window. It’s a masterful touch that adds elegance to an already refined design.

The sundial at 6 o’clock, meanwhile, shows the date and month. IWC’s internal 32150 caliber powers the automatic movement and 72-hour power reserve. Horophiles can choose between an 18-carat 5N gold case or a stainless steel model with a silver-plated dial. Both variations feature folding clasps and straps made from traceable Swiss calf leather. IWC sensibly paired a taupe strap with the gold case, but the navy blue strap of the stainless steel case feels like the play here. Both examples hit the market in April 2023; the stainless runs approximately $11,500, while the gold roughly doubles that to $22,400.
