Anniversary watches often settle for an engraving. IWC’s Ingenieur Automatic 50th Anniversary instead returns to a rare brushed-dial version of Gérald Genta’s 1976 Ingenieur SL, then packages the reference in two contemporary sizes.
The Ingenieur Automatic 50th Anniversary comes in 40mm and 35mm stainless-steel versions, each limited to 1,150 pieces. Both use a vertically brushed silver-plated dial rather than the grid texture associated with the current Ingenieur, with rhodium-plated hands and markers filled with Super-LumiNova. The familiar lightning-bolt motif beneath “Ingenieur” is replaced by a discreet “50.”
The 40mm reference measures 10.7mm thick, is water resistant to 100 meters, and uses IWC’s automatic caliber 32111 with a 120-hour power reserve. Its soft-iron inner case adds magnetic-field protection. The 35mm version uses caliber 47110 and a sapphire display back. Both retain the integrated H-link bracelet architecture that makes the modern Ingenieur recognizable.
The anniversary pair sits alongside more material-driven interpretations such as the ceramic Ingenieur Automatic 42, but the appeal here is historical specificity rather than novelty. IWC lists the 40mm edition at $15,000 and the 35mm at $12,900 in the U.S.; both are available through IWC boutiques and authorized retailers while their allocations last.
