Dutch bike manufacturer Carqon offers a unique and family-friendly alternative to the electric bicycle market. Its product is called the Carqon Cargo eBike, the first two-wheeled cargo bike designed for families. The Carqon eBike features a cargo box intended for children, offering safety devices and an easy-access side door. At first glance, the Carqon Cargo eBike looks like a bicycle pushing a wash-tub, but this electric, urban rider deserves a second look before making a final judgment.
The cargo box is constructed from recyclable HDPE plastic and is designed to carry up to two children. Along its side is an integrated door to allow children to step into the bike and save parents the back strain. Three-point safety belts fasten children to their seats, and the inside of the box is lined with soft-touch coating for comfort. Practical features include double drainage with anti-slip flooring for easier clean-ups. The outside of the box features an alloy car wrap for weather durability and style.
The Carqon Cargo eBike power comes from Bosch Performance CX Cargo line electric motor fed by a 400-Wh Bosch PowerPack with dual motors as an option. Buyers have the choice between two gear options. One is the Enviolo N380 Stepless Gear Hub using a quiet Gates Carbon Belt drive. The second option is the Shimano Deore XT ten-speed derailleur using a stainless-steel KMC chain. Carqon claims the classic cargo ebike has an estimated range of 74 miles. Using a 4A Bosch charger can deliver a full charge, on average, in 3.5 hours. The Classic cargo eBike’s frame is made from 100 percent aluminum for strength and keeps its curb weight down to 132 pounds.
Given that this eBike will be hauling precious cargo, Carqon uses a double steering cable mechanism for greater precision control. Its suspension is designed to handle the urban streets – sidewalk cracks and all. The handlebar is adjustable and can be mounted flat for parents with a competitive side. A set of Tektro Dorado four-piston hydraulic disc brakes provides plenty of stopping power. For visibility, Carqon equipped the Cargo eBike with incorporated reflectors in the pedals, tires, and mudguards. Spanniga provides lightning with its Axendo line of bicycle lights. Carqon is currently taking orders for the Cargo eBike and offers it in four different color options.
