PlayStation fans have been eagerly awaiting news of a new handheld platform, and it seems their wishes may finally be granted with the announcement of PlayStation’s Project Q. Revealed during the brand’s spring showcase, Project Q has left fans buzzing with excitement and anticipation.

While details are currently limited, it is known that Project Q will feature an eight-inch HD display and will incorporate all the buttons found on a regular DualSense controller. Additionally, the device will be capable of playing games installed on a PS5 through a WiFi connection. SIE CEO and President Jim Ryan revealed that Project Q is set to launch later this year, suggesting a release sometime in 2023.

Project Q will complement the expanding PS5 ecosystem, which has already seen remarkable growth this year. Earlier in January, PlayStation introduced the DualSense Edge, followed by the launch of the highly anticipated PSVR 2 in February. During the Project Q reveal, Sony also unveiled its first official wireless earbuds, boasting lossless audio compatibility with PS5 and PC.

As we speculate on the price of Project Q, it’s helpful to consider comparable devices in the handheld market. For instance, machines like the Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally, which offer portable gaming PC capabilities, typically range between $250 and $500. A notable contender in terms of functionality is the Razer Edge, an Android gaming device priced at $400. This gives us a rough estimate of what Project Q’s price point might be.

While we await more information about Project Q, one thing is clear: it will likely serve as a companion device for the PS5, leveraging the console’s remote play functionality. Unlike the Nintendo Switch or the ROG Ally, Project Q does not appear to support docking. Instead, it focuses on providing gamers with a convenient way to access their PS5 games on the go.
