The PEN formula works best when the camera is small enough to leave the bag. The new OM SYSTEM PEN revives the rangefinder-style Micro Four Thirds body under OM Digital Solutions’ own name, adding a built-in viewfinder and weather protection without turning it into a miniature flagship.

The unfamiliarity is mostly in the badge rather than the lineage. OM Digital Solutions took over Olympus’ imaging business in January 2021, inheriting the PEN, OM-D, and Zuiko names before introducing OM SYSTEM as its new brand later that year. PEN itself dates to Yoshihisa Maitani’s 1959 Olympus Pen, a compact half-frame film camera that helped ignite the format’s boom; Olympus says the broader Pen series went on to sell more than 17 million units.

The name returned in 2009 with the PEN E-P1, Olympus’ first mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera and an early showcase for Micro Four Thirds. That makes this 2026 model less a clean-sheet launch than the first PEN to carry one of the company’s longest-running camera ideas fully into the OM SYSTEM era.

The body weighs 13.9 ounces and uses a 20.4-megapixel sensor with TruePic IX processing. A 121-point all-cross phase-detection autofocus system gains AI Human and Pet Detection, while five-axis sensor-shift stabilization provides up to 5.5 stops of compensation. IPX1 splash resistance and dust protection make it more credible as an everyday carry camera, particularly when paired with a sealed lens.

Creative controls remain central to the PEN identity. Color and Monochrome Profile Control can save custom recipes, while computational modes include High Res Shot, Live ND, HDR, Live Composite, and Focus Stacking. The camera also records 4K and vertical video, supports an external microphone, and uses an electronic viewfinder rather than relying solely on its rear screen. The broader PEN system remains focused on compact interchangeable-lens shooting.

The body is available to preorder in black or silver for $999.99 and ships in late October. A weather-sealed 14-42mm kit costs $1,099.99; a two-lens kit is $1,299.99.
