The original DeLorean Motor Company closed its doors in 1982. Forty years later, DMC is back with a new gullwing door car called the DeLorean Alpha5. This digital unveiling shows the complete exterior and interior of the Alpha5 after years of only seeing renderings and concept designs. Fans of the original stainless-steel Irish-built coupe may find few similarities in the new DeLorean. Still, the Alpha5 marks the beginning of where the old company left off.
Like the original DMC-12, Italdesign created the DeLorean Alpha5 shape. However, this new model is an electric four-door GT sports car. Passengers step into the Alpha5 through its massive gullwing doors. The Alpha5 is slightly longer than a Porsche Taycan but with a shorter roofline. At the front, the car features thin LED headlights surrounded by a shapely hood and fenders. The car’s rear offers a hint of the original DMC-12 with a vented rear windscreen cover. However, the smooth flowing body lines of the DeLorean Alpha5 are polar opposites compared to its 1980s ancestor.
Photos of its interior show a simple but elegant cabin with cup holders and a center high-mounted floating console with a wireless charging pad. In addition, the DeLorean Motor Company released estimated specifications on the car’s performance based on the Alpha5 “Base Performance Model.” Claimed specs by the company see the Alpha5 using a 100-kWh battery pack providing an estimated 300 miles of range. There are no details on its electric motors, but we know the new DeLorean EV can take passengers on a ride from zero to 60 in three seconds and onward to a top speed of 155 mph.
Those attending the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance can see the official premiere of the DeLorean Alpha5 on August 18th. Moreover, the DeLorean Motor Company has stated that the Alpha5 is only the beginning of a lineup of vehicles that includes a V8-powered coupe, EV sedan, and hydrogen-powered SUV.
