A breath of fresh air at the time of its release in 2016, Deadpool is superhero movie unlike any other. While the 2017 Wolverine film Logan matched Deadpool in its adult tone (and its “R” rating), no film in history has featured a superhero like Deadpool. To call Deadpool irreverent is a bit of an understatement. This film is distinctly postmodern, hilarious, and at times, downright filthy.
If you are the type of moviegoer who loved what Deadpool had to offer, there’s good news. If the new Deadpool 2 teaser “Wet on Wet” is any indication, the upcoming sequel will offer more of the same.
The “Wet on Wet” teaser speaks volumes about the franchise although it contains less than 10 seconds of footage from Deadpool 2 itself. In keeping with the madcap and highly meta Deadpool spirit, the bulk of this 2-minute trailer plays like an episode of the classic 1980s PBS television program Joy of Painting with Deadpool replacing its host Bob Ross.
Sporting a laid-back look and extremely full afro, Deadpool serves up an amazing parody of Ross’ soft-spoken delivery and apparent ability to conjure a painting out of thin air. In addition to referencing a TV personality that only those over 30 are likely to recognize, the “Wet on Wet” teaser offers other cues that the Deadpool franchise isn’t aiming at the typical adolescent superhero fan. When Deadpool drops the f-bomb and reimagines snow-capped peaks as mountains of cocaine, you know that you’re miles away from other Marvel films.
