Artek’s Paimio Sanatorium Anniversary Collection commemorates the 90th anniversary of the renowned Paimio Sanatorium, an architectural masterpiece designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto. Nestled amidst verdant pine forests, the sanatorium opened its doors in the summer of 1933, establishing itself as a groundbreaking medical facility for tuberculosis patients. Today, it is celebrated for its functional design and iconic furniture.

The Paimio Sanatorium Anniversary Collection by Artek pays homage to this historic institution with a range of exquisite pieces. The collection features a special birch wood edition of the iconic Paimio armchair, accompanied by Aalto stools adorned in forest green, sun yellow, and sky blue – colors reminiscent of the sanatorium’s interiors. Additionally, the collection introduces new hues for Aino Aalto’s Side Table 606.

The centerpiece of the collection is the limited edition Armchair 41, meticulously crafted from oiled birch wood, showcasing its warm and organic allure. Only 90 numbered pieces have been produced, making it a true collector’s item. For each armchair sold, Artek donates 500 euros to support the Paimio Sanatorium Foundation.

The Stool 60, originally introduced in 1933, is now available in three new colors that symbolize the patients’ everyday experiences at the sanatorium. Yellow represents sunlight, green embodies the nearby forest, and blue reflects the healing power of fresh air. For every stool sold, 30 euros will be directed toward the foundation.

Aino Aalto’s Side Table 606, originally designed for the sanatorium’s lobby, also receives a makeover in this collection. The new mint green shade is inspired by the ceilings of patient rooms and reading halls, while the soft light grey hue recalls the metal parts of stair railings and the stripes along the staircase walls.

The Paimio Sanatorium’s color palette was created in collaboration with Finnish artist Eino Kauria, resulting in a harmonious blend of calming and stimulating hues that draw inspiration from nature. The sanatorium’s lobby and main staircase are adorned with delightful sunny yellow, while soothing blues and greens grace the ceilings of lounges, halls, and patient rooms.

To mark the 90th anniversary of the sanatorium, Artek will direct a portion of the collection’s proceeds to the Paimio Sanatorium Foundation. This foundation has been tirelessly preserving the sanatorium and exploring new ways to utilize the property since 2020.
