8BitDo FlipPad Gives Portrait Games Real Buttons

A hinged USB-C controller adds a D-pad and ABXY keys without turning a phone into a wide handheld.

Most phone controllers make a handset wider; the 8BitDo FlipPad folds its controls over the screen instead. The $29.99 accessory plugs into a USB-C iPhone or Android device and adds a physical D-pad, ABXY buttons, and function keys for games designed around portrait orientation.

Its hinged panel rests on the display with a protective pad beneath it, creating a layout reminiscent of compact handheld consoles without requiring Bluetooth pairing or a battery. Players can flip the controls upward to reach the screen, answer a call, or send a message without unplugging the accessory.

8BitDo rates the hinge for more than 6,000 cycles and the USB-C connector for more than 10,000 insertions under laboratory conditions.

Compatibility is intentionally straightforward but not universal. The controller works with supported iOS and Android games that accept physical input, and its connector accommodates most phone cases. Because the pad occupies part of the screen, it is best suited to retro titles, emulators where permitted, and vertical games designed with spare display area.

The FlipPad is available to preorder for $29.99. Its low price and pocketable format make it a narrowly focused alternative to larger telescoping mobile controllers.
