This 1955 Jaguar D-Type exhibits a sultry frame built upon the high-performance number XKD 520 chassis. It was just the seventh ever made to order, finished for racing legend Bib Stillwell in June 1955. Behind the wheel of this iconic racer, he would go on to win the open-wheel Australian Drivers’ Championship four consecutive times. After receiving the vehicle in January 1956, Stillwell raced it extensively and set a number of records in it locally. Melbourne’s Albert Park was the site of the Moomba Tourist Trophy in March 1956 where the 1955 Jaguar D-Type swept in for a second-place win.
By 1958, the car had been sold and a factory-supplied 3.8-liter engine was installed. It was still able to snag a first-place finish at the Queensland Tourist Trophy in 1961. In 1967, Richard Attwood, winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 obtained the car. Year after year, whoever has owned it has kept this exquisite piece of automotive engineering in pristine condition. Today, it retains all its documentation as well as being an excellent example of a period car in advance of hitting the Sotheby’s auction block at lot number 171 in Paris.
