Just days following the unexpected passing of Virgil Abloh, Mercedes-Maybach has unveiled its Virgil Abloh x Mercedes-Maybach “Project MAYBACH” concept designer vehicle. It is described as a “two-seater, battery-electric off-road coupe” meant to visualize the future of electric-powered travel. Project MAYBACH is a result of a design team given complete creative freedom which was led by both Gorden Wagener and Virgil Abloh. The impressive-looking vehicle measures nearly 20-feet long, with most of it being the massive hood. Its exterior design combines straight and curved body lines. It features a boxy look with a curved roofline that rises from the bodywork in the shape of a liquid bubble.

At the front is a mixture of round and narrow headlights to give the appearance of a luxury car prepared for off-road adventures. Features on the Virgil Abloh x Mercedes-Maybach “Project MAYBACH” include front and rear skid plates, big off-road tires, bolt-on fenders, and a roof cage. In addition, the car was designed with solar cells under its hood, which would help generate a longer electrical range.

The interior is as radically designed as the exterior, dressed in a desert-inspired shade of sand-colored upholstery. Although Project MAYBACH is meant to represent the future, several details make us think of the past. For example, the center-positioned digital instrument cluster features retro-styled metal knobs. In addition, the interior is equipped with a Maybach-branded ax that is integrated into the car’s door insert. The car’s interior also features more storage compartments than a pair of cargo shorts. Project MAYBACH is currently showcased to the public at the Rubell Museum in Miami, Florida.
