During its Partner Summit 2022 today, Snap announced the launch of its first flying camera dubbed Snap Pixy. Snap describes the Pixy as “a small smart drone with a camera and camera function.” The drone is a “pocket-sized” device that operates on its own, meaning there is no controller. Instead, users simply tap a button to send Pixy into one of four preset flight paths. The device floats, orbits, or follows a few feet above the user to capture photos and videos, then lands in the user’s palm.
In terms of its design, the Snap Pixy is a small, yellow rectangular drone with a camera at one end. It weighs 3.6 ounces with its removable battery. The drone has a 12MP front-facing camera and 16GB of onboard storage and the battery is good for between 5-8 flights of 10 to 20 seconds. Calling Pixy a companion to its flagship app, Snapchat, Snap said videos and pictures from flights automatically transfer into the user’s Snapchat Memories. Users can then edit the pictures and share them on any other platform, according to the company. Pixy stores up to 100 videos or 1,000 photos. Snap is currently taking orders for the Pixy and delivery is anticipated sometime in June or July of this year.
