Samsung Electronics has introduced a groundbreaking solution to tackle plastic microfiber emissions during laundry cycles with its latest innovation, the Less Microfiber™ Filter. This external washing machine filter, inspired by renowned apparel maker Patagonia and developed in collaboration with the global ocean conservation organization Ocean Wise, is set to revolutionize sustainable laundry practices. The filter, building upon the success of last year’s Less Microfiber™ Cycle, promises to significantly reduce microplastics while ensuring effective and effortless washing.

The Less Microfiber™ Filter is now available in Korea and the U.K., with plans for a global rollout in the third quarter. Samsung’s commitment to addressing microplastic emissions stems from the rising concerns about their impact on ocean health and the environment. By teaming up with Ocean Wise and Patagonia, Samsung aims to engineer technologies that prevent the release of microplastics into our daily lives.

The Less Microfiber™ Filter complements the previously developed Less Microfiber™ Cycle, which reduces microplastic shedding by 54% through Samsung’s Ecobubble™ technology. With the new filter, up to 98% of microplastics released during laundry can be captured, preventing them from entering the ocean.

Designed with long-term sustainability in mind, the Less Microfiber™ Filter is made from recycled plastics and boasts a mountable design for compatibility with standard washing machine models. Its blades capture microplastics using a mesh with a width of 65-70 micrometers. The filter only requires cleaning once a month, making maintenance hassle-free.

Samsung’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the filter itself. Through connectivity with the SmartThings platform, users can monitor the filter’s status and receive cleaning alerts through the SmartThings app. Moreover, the Less Microfiber™ Cycle is available as a preset option on select Samsung washing machines, with plans to expand its availability to previous Wi-Fi-enabled models via an over-the-network update.
