Handheld gaming has evolved from a niche category into one of the most competitive corners of consumer tech, and ASUS is marking ROG’s 20th anniversary with a bundle that pushes beyond the handheld itself. The ROG XBOX Ally X20 combines a high-performance portable gaming PC with a set of lightweight augmented reality glasses, creating a package designed to blur the line between traditional handheld gaming and personal entertainment.

At the center of the system is a 7.4-inch Nebula HDR OLED display powered by AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. The combination promises desktop-class visual fidelity in a portable form factor, while AI-assisted performance management dynamically balances frame rates and power consumption. The result is a device aimed at delivering sustained gaming performance without sacrificing battery life.

The Ally X20’s hardware reflects ROG’s increasingly refined industrial design language. A slim magnesium chassis keeps weight under control, textured grips improve comfort during extended sessions, and the minimalist control layout avoids the visual clutter that often accompanies gaming hardware. ASUS has also enlarged the battery for the anniversary edition, addressing one of the most persistent challenges facing handheld gaming devices.

The bundle’s distinguishing feature, however, is the inclusion of foldable AR glasses. Connected via a single cable, the glasses project a larger virtual display that can transform a cramped airplane seat or hotel room into a more immersive gaming environment. Unlike many AR accessories that feel experimental, these appear designed as a practical extension of the handheld rather than a separate gadget competing for attention.
As the handheld gaming market becomes increasingly crowded, the Ally X20 stands out by focusing on the broader experience rather than raw specifications alone. The hardware is impressive, but the more interesting story is ASUS’s attempt to build a complete portable gaming ecosystem. Whether AR glasses become a standard companion for handheld PCs remains to be seen, but the Ally X20 offers a compelling glimpse of what that future could look like.
