You’re dead wrong if you thought radars were only for fighter jets because Garmin has just released a radar system for bicycles. You might’ve guessed, the Garmin Varia Rearview Radar is obviously not designed to help a cyclist track and shoot down other moving vehicles, but it’s a warning system that alerts the rider of any vehicles approaching from behind that are as far away as 140 meters.

The package consists of 2 pieces: the radar and remote display unit. The radar will stick on the rear seatpost of your bike to detect any approaching cars from behind, then transmit that information to the remote display unit which is usually mounted on top of the handlebar. You can check the distance between yourself and the car on the display unit, while the radar, which doubles as a tail light, will start blinking more and more frequently as the car moves in closer to you. This technology isn’t anything that will wow others nor is it ground-breaking, but it just might make enough of a difference to be life-saving.
