‘Bumblebee’ Official Teaser Trailer

The most popular Transformer returns to the big screen in his original 80s design, with director Travis Knight of ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ at the helm.

The world is still (happily) on the nostalgia bandwagon, and we’re taking things to the 80s again for the upcoming Transformers spin-off that features Bumblebee as our hero, simply titled Bumblebee. Set in 1987, almost 20 years before the events of Michael Bay’s first Transformers film, Bumblebee takes the form of a classic Volkswagen Beetle instead of a Chevy Camaro.

Before you shake your head and go “Not again…,” we should let you know that Michael Bay is taking a back seat in the producer’s spot, with director Travis Knight of Laika Studios, who directed Kubo and the Two Strings, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls at the helm. While we’re not assuming the complete absence of Bayhem just yet, the trailer looks very promising and personal, like we’ve seen in many of our favorite childhood movies in which the main human character bonds with a robot/creature/alien companion. With Knight’s proven track record of creating an authentic bond between his characters and the audience, the film seems to be in good hands.

At the very least, now we’ll get to see a Hot Toys Bumblebee figure that’s faithful to the original design.
