In a way, Artisans de Genève is a contradiction unto itself. The atelier produces bespoke masterworks for private clients – surrendering a Rolex or Patek Philippe for customization is table stakes. And yet, at the same time, these Swiss horologists serve as one of the few equalizers among the ultrawealthy. No amount of money or prestige can influence who the shop chooses to work with next.

They put their craft front and center: each example is a challenge, and each challenge is unique – not because of what the client wants, but because of why they want it. After all, aesthetic customizations can be replicated. Poorly, to be sure, but perhaps passable when glanced over drinks in the admiral’s lounge. What the also-rans can’t replicate is the unique story behind each piece. Those stories and what the watch means to its owner make each example a true one-of-one.

Their latest piece, “Honey Green,” is, of course, no exception. Commissioned from a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116508, the dial is this example’s centerpiece. It features a balanced, bluish-green sunray finish. The hue has roots in English green, but per the client’s specifications, it skews bluer than the subtle cyan of the base color.

“For me, green represents hope, freedom, and a certain sweetness of life,” the client said. “Entrusting this project to Artisans de Genève was an obvious choice. They are alchemists of color and know-how.”

Artisans de Genève and the client agreed on yellow gold casing and details to match the green dial – alchemy, indeed. The bakelite bezel insert is an homage to the client’s treasured vintage watches, with gold decals that stand out against its green lacquer. The counters have been sandblasted with gold powder for another vintage touch. The Rolex’s original pushers have also been replaced: the watch now sports a machined crown guard and Millerighe pushers detailed with striated lines – an iconic characteristic of early chronographs.

The original Rolex calibre 4130 self-winding chronograph movement has been redecorated but otherwise untouched. The original interlinked gold strap is pictured on the watch, but Artisans de Genève also developed a green leather strap as a finishing touch.
