Over the past 25 years, the Los Angeles-based furniture company Modernica has produced some classic designs while reviving the largely forgotten art of high-pressure fiberglass molding. Of course, the legacy of the sneaker and apparel company Vans dates back even further, and its checkerboard slip-on has broken out of the surfing and skateboarding community to resonate throughout the fashion world for decades.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the black-and-white checkerboard pattern appears in striking form as part of the new Vans Vault x Modernica Collection. This special line of Modernica Shell Chairs epitomizes that breezy, laid-back style that is uniquely Vans.

Created in collaboration with Vans Vault (a premium Van’s label that borrows elements from the company’s extensive design history), the Vans Vault x Modernica Collection mirrors graphics of the 2019 Vans Vault footwear line. In addition to that iconic checkerboard, these chairs can be purchased with palm leaves and Hawaiian “aloha” print motifs.
