In 2004, Tivoli Audio captured hearts with its pint-sized portable AM/FM clock radio, the SongBook. Though it disappeared from shelves in 2010, its legacy endures. Now, the SongBook is returning triumphantly in the form of two Bluetooth-powered portables, the SongBook and SongBook Max. These modern marvels pay homage to the original design while embracing contemporary technology.

At first glance, these radios appear to result from a mad scientist’s experiment, blending the SongBook’s DNA with elements of a 1980s boombox, Tivoli Audio’s Model One Radio, and a touch of Dieter Rams’ aesthetics. Available in cream/brown and nostalgic avocado green, the SongBook is priced at $450, while the SongBook Max costs $600. Preorders are available now, with shipping scheduled for November.

Designed with integrated carry handles and IPX4 splash resistance, these Bluetooth 5.3 portables are perfect for poolside lounging. However, their weight might deter long journeys, as the SongBook weighs 6.7 pounds, while the Max tips the scales at 11.5 pounds.

Both models maintain Tivoli’s love for mono sound, featuring powerful drivers and amps. The SongBook boasts a 3.5-inch full-range driver and a 3.5-inch woofer, driven by a 40-watt amp. In contrast, the SongBook Max offers a 4-inch subwoofer, a 4-inch midrange driver, and a 0.75-inch tweeter powered by two 50-watt amps. Both serve as amps with a unique 1/4-inch analog input toggle for turntables or electric guitars, along with a three-band manual EQ slider.

Inside, a lithium-ion rechargeable battery promises 10 hours of use, charged via USB-C PD at 5, 9, and 15 volts. The SongBook Max even features FM and DAB+ radios with five presets and a convenient scan button. Its oversized tuning knob and extendable antenna add a nostalgic touch.
