Grado Labs has taken an unusual approach to product storytelling with its latest autism awareness initiative. Rather than launching a conventional limited edition, the Brooklyn audio maker created a single, one-of-a-kind headphone built on the Grado Signature S550. The piece was produced by Grado and then finished with hand-painted artwork by an Eden II participant, turning the headphone into something closer to a functional art object than a standard retail release.

That distinction matters. The project is not framed around new acoustic technology or a revised consumer configuration. Its significance lies in authorship and purpose. Grado says only one unit has been created, and 100 percent of the proceeds will go directly to Eden II Programs, the Staten Island-based organization that provides education, residential services, and community programming for individuals with autism.

The collaboration also reflects a long-standing relationship rather than a one-off awareness campaign. Grado notes that it has supported Eden II for nearly 30 years, with Richard Grado personally involved over that period, including service on the board and as board chair. The artwork on the headphone housing was created by Juliana, an Eden II participant who has been part of the organization for more than two decades.

Auctioned through Eden II rather than sold as a standard product, the headphone functions as both fundraiser and symbol. In a category that often leans on repetition, Grado’s one-off reminds the market that design can still carry a personal hand.
