The early 2000s were not shy about making cushioning part of a sneaker’s visual identity. The New Balance 983 revives that idea without simply reproducing an archival runner, building a new lifestyle silhouette around visible technology and exaggerated proportions.

Its defining feature is a dual-density midsole punctuated by elliptical ABZORB SBS pods. Wave-shaped molding runs through the sole, while rounded synthetic overlays and reflective detailing give the upper a similarly fluid structure. The debut Shadow Blue and Zinc Blue palette keeps the technical geometry legible without turning the shoe into a fluorescent Y2K caricature.

New Balance describes the 983 as a reimagination of 2000s performance running rather than a retro. That distinction matters: unlike the brand’s familiar 992 experiments, this is a newly developed platform borrowing the visual language of older performance models. Coco Gauff and Aminé front the launch campaign, emphasizing its intended role as a style shoe rather than a current competition runner.
The 983 launched with a retail price of $159.99.
