The classic vulcanized skate shoe has always made a clean bargain: excellent board feel in exchange for modest cushioning. The new New Balance Numeric 340 attempts to renegotiate that deal with an encapsulated polyurethane midsole hidden inside a familiar low-profile form.

Designed as a modern evolution of the vulcanized silhouette, the unisex 340 keeps a flat, flexible visual stance while adding structure where repeated impacts usually expose the category’s limits. The polyurethane unit is intended to deliver longer-lasting support than conventional foam without isolating the foot from the deck. Reinforced high-wear panels, a grippy rubber outsole, and a padded collar complete a shoe meant for actual sessions rather than skate-derived styling.

The design is deliberately quiet. Suede and textile panels follow the toe and quarter with minimal interruption, while the small “N” mark leaves the profile closer to traditional skate shoes than to a technical runner. Launch colors include black with white, Zinc Blue with navy, and white with navy.
That restraint gives the engineering change room to matter: the 340 does not advertise its cushioning with exaggerated geometry, and its low sidewall still places the foot visually close to the board.
The Numeric 340 will retail for $99.99 through New Balance stockists.
