Japanese architecture is known to push the envelope of design in new and innovative ways that most are not audacious to attempt. Takeshi Hosaka Architects pushes the boundaries of traditional residential design with a house in Byoubugaura in Yokohama. The concrete structure’s interior contrasts with the orthogonal exterior with floors that slope upwards towards the back of the building, a nod to the rolling hills surrounding the area. The building itself is visually the height of a two story building, but the interior ceiling heights are kept to a minimum, allowing three stories to be designed within. The experimental nature of the design may dissuade some from occupying the space, but we must applaud the designer and owners for their unique vision.
