The developers of the EyeQue VisionCheck 2 aim to bring the benefits of visiting an optometrist into your own home with their eye screening device. This small device uses a smartphone screen to replicate the expensive equipment found at an optometrist’s office. A user downloads the VisionCheck 2 app to an iPhone or Android smartphone and slides the separately purchased VisionCheck 2 device onto the phone. The app then gives on-screen instructions to begin the test. The user looks into the device’s soft eyecup at green and red lines, using buttons to manipulate the lines until they overlap into a single yellow line. Additional measurements are recorded in a similar fashion, for a total of eight measurements for each eye. The program feeds the results through its algorithms and calculates the user’s vision test results. The VisionCheck 2 can identify not only near and farsightedness but can even determine if the user has astigmatism.

The EyeQue VisionCheck 1 was introduced several years ago. The VisionCheck 2 is a bit more form-friendly than the original and reduces the need for a Bluetooth connection and batteries. The testing has also been slightly modified to run more quickly than the original. To assure accuracy, VisionCheck requires users to complete at least three tests before submitting results. If any major discrepancies are discovered among the test results the EyeQue support staff will reach out to provide assistance with completing the test. Before going out and spending money on expensive glasses, EyeQue will provide users with a trial pair of glasses based on their results for a cost of $19. Once you are happy with the results, you can enter your information into glasses retailer websites like Zenni or EyeBuyDirect to get new glasses. This is a fully-funded Kickstarter campaign and delivery is expected in May.
