Three sonic modes and a pair of JAN6418 tubes turn the compact disc into a genuinely portable hi-fi source.

Portable CD players traditionally favor lightness and simplicity. The Cayin CP6 moves in the opposite direction, combining a physical disc transport with vacuum tubes, balanced amplification, and the connectivity of a modern digital source.

Two Raytheon JAN6418 tubes form a dual-channel Class A stage inside the CNC-machined 6063 aluminum chassis. Cayin’s Triple Timbre system provides Classic Tube, Modern Tube, and Solid-State settings, while separate Class A and Class AB amplifier modes offer another degree of adjustment. Dual Cirrus Logic CS4308P DAC chips feed 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced headphone outputs, with the latter delivering up to 1,300 mW per channel when the player uses external DC power.

The CP6 can also operate as a USB DAC, digital transport, or bidirectional Bluetooth 5.4 component. Optical and coaxial outputs connect it to an external converter, while Bluetooth reception supports formats including LDAC and aptX Adaptive. Its ripping function saves CDs as lossless WAV files to compatible USB storage.

A proprietary anti-shock mechanism addresses playback while moving, and the 7,300mAh battery provides up to 7.5 hours of headphone use. Even so, its 1.6-pound weight makes it more transportable than pocketable. Compared with recent portable audio players, the CP6 is closer to a complete desktop audio system that happens to accept discs.

Bloom Audio offers the Cayin CP6 in the United States for $699, with an optional leather case sold separately.
