The new 2023 Lexus RZ 450e is the brand’s first dedicated global BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle). As one would assume, the new Lexus RZ 450e shares much of its structure and mechanical hardware with the equally new Toyota bZ4X. However, Lexus being Lexus, the RX 450e is much more luxurious and hosts features unique to the brand. For instance, in styling, the 2023 RZ 450e displays Lexus’s current design language of a spindle grille which extends out from a central focal point. But, this being an EV, the grille does not have air intakes. As a result, this improves aerodynamics at the front. Moreover, the electric crossover’s profile showcases a sculpted design that looks like it’s been carved by an airstream and ends with a full-width taillight. The roofline swoops back and ends with an integrated rear spoiler.
The Lexus RZ 450e uses two electric motors, a 150-kW at the front and a 90-kW at the rear, powered by a 71.4-kWh battery pack. Lexus has not confirmed performance figures, but we guesstimate it to be near the 300-hp benchmark with an estimated 225 miles of range. Unlike the Toyota bZ4X, the Lexus RZ 450e is only available with an all-wheel drive. It uses the Lexus dubbed eAxle, which integrates the vehicle’s motor, transaxle, and inverter into one unit. This was done to save space in packaging while balancing the vehicle’s weight distribution. Moreover, this system allows the redirection and control of 100% of the powertrain’s torque between the front and rear axle for optimal performance in varying conditions.
Standard interior features on the 2023 Lexus RZ 450e include a 14-inch center touchscreen with voice command capability. It also has the latest driver aid and safety systems like Pre-Collision, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Emergency Driving Stop System. Lexus did confirm buyers could option the EV with a yoke-style steering wheel, but the official press photos do not show it. Nevertheless, the new Lexus RZ 450e will be available later this year.
