First, a public announcement: The AMG variants of Mercedes-Benz models will no longer be followed by the letters AMG at the end of their names, but will be branded as Mercedes-AMG vehicles, much like what Daimler has done with Mercedes-Maybach. This is done in an attempt to mentally associate their AMG vehicles with their F1 team, as if driving a car that has the same name as F1 cars will make them faster.
Now that’s out of the way, make way for the Mercedes-AMG C63 and C63 S. We knew that the C-Class was a beautiful vehicle, but with the recently announced coupe variation of the bread and butter Benz, AMG seems to have upped the game with more snarl. The design retains the overall shape of the 4-door version, but towards the rear end we can’t help but wish for more visual drama. Maybe AMG is saving something more special for a Black Series down the line.
The two versions only differ in engine output, with 469 hp and 503 hp sprinting to 60 in 3.9 and 3.8 seconds. With high output numbers like those, the difference seems ignorable, but for those who need that extra edge will no doubt cough up the cash for the extra letter ‘S.’ The car will be officially unveiled to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
