When BMW launched the legendary M5 back in 1985, people looked at the super sedan in confusion. It was the ultimate sleeper car, with the looks of a docile premium sedan but the performance capable of shaming some sports cars. That formula was honed and perfected when the E39 M5 launched in the late 90s, some calling it the best sports sedan ever built. Everyone from Mercedes to Audi followed suit, shoehorning large engines to family sedan bodies.

Cadillac was late to the game and in a desperate attempt to remedy their image as a brand for old-folks they’ve tried their hand in the same formula with their V-line of cars. Due to Cadillac’s, and to some degree parent company GM’s reputation, the V-cars were overlooked in favor of more established German options by many buyers, but things might change soon.

The new CTS-V packs a powerful punch from a 6.2 L V8 that is good for an eye watering zero to 60 of 3.7 seconds, thanks to a healthy dose of 640 horses. With that kind of power lurking under the hood, you could easily take the executive board out for lunch and sprint over for a round of golf before your lunch break is over.

The car will be a steal compared to its German rivals starting around $84,000 when it launches this August, so get ready to impress and horrify your grandpa at the same time with this beast of a machine.
