The March 1985 Geneva Motor Show marked a rare occasion — the presentation of the 1987 Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth Chassis #003. It was one of just four prototypes of RS500s. According to Group A FIA racing rules, the RS model could be upgraded with improvements designed to boost its racing potential.
The mechanically-modified Cosworth engine was boosted in power to 224 hp and was joined by upgraded brakes and modified bodywork. A rare example of the iconic Fast Ford of the 1980s — which was designed to bring a performance car to the “blue-collar hero” — the car was recognized for its unique place in history in 2017. That year, it was named the “Ultimate Cosworth” at one of the largest one-make car shows in the United Kingdom.
Now, the iconic model comes to lot number 418 on the Silverstone Auctions’ block. The rare RS500 was owned by the Ford corporation as a test car for the development of its intercooler turbocharged engines and has documentation verifying that just 69,000 miles are on its odometer. The vehicle was serviced by specialists at Graham Goode before the auction to ensure it is in pristine operating condition.
