The Vollebak Aerogel Puffer recently dropped in a Lunar White Edition and Black Edition. This ultralightweight puffer is windproof and boasts a water-repellent outer shell and 100% 7D polyamide lining. Vollebak’s Aerogel Puffer features synthetic insulation made in Italy by PrimaLoft using 100% polyester fused with aerogel particles for a fill power of 600+ and a fill weight of only 680 grams. In total, the jacket weighs 1100 grams. It has a two-way front zipper, two zipped chest pockets, two zipped side pockets, and one zipped internal pocket.

There’s also a rear cord adjustment at its hood, a cord adjustment at the hem, and elasticated cuffs for added warmth and insulation. Vollebak says the Aerogel Puffer stays warm to -30°C because Aerogel has nanopores that are 10,000 times thinner than a single human hair.

Ultimately, the material makes it nearly impossible for air to seep through. Stanford University invented Aerogel, and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory adopted it in the 1990s for space travel. It’s the ideal replacement for down. While down is comfortable, it doesn’t hold up in the rain because it clumps when the fibers get wet. The Aerogel Puffer recreates down’s lightweight comfort and warmth and performs better in windy and wet weather. It uses advanced synthetic insulation and embeds it with Aerogel particles and an outer shell of ultralightweight, weatherproofed yarn. The Vollebak Aerogel Puffer is available online for $1,295 on the company’s website.
