First Teaser Trailer Released For ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’

After 7 years in development, it’s been announced the film will premiere in April 2023.

The official teaser trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie debuted during a Nintendo Direct-Illumination computer animation studios presentation. The animated film will feature Chris Pratt voicing Nintendo’s iconic Italian plumber-turned-superhero.

The trailer opens with a castle landing on an ice kingdom. Magikoopah Kamek (Kevin Michael Richardson) announces the arrival of Bowser, king of the Koopas (Jack Black). A pathetic snowball fight ensues between the ice kingdom’s blue penguins. With a wave of his wand, Kamek stuns the penguin army, and Bowser’s fireball proceeds to burn down the ice castle. We see him approach a ‘power-up’ star, yelling, “I finally found it. Now, who’s gonna stop me?”

Cut to our protagonist: Mario falls out of a green pipe into a field of mushrooms and is greeted by Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), who says, “C’mon, Mario!” as the two hop from mushroom cap to cap. Mario shouts, “Mushroom Kingdom… here we come!”

In addition to Pratt, Richardson, Black, and Key, the film features the voice talents of Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. “Mario and Luigi are two of the most beloved heroes in all of popular culture, and we are honored to have the unique opportunity to work so closely with Shigeru Miyamoto and the widely imaginative team at Nintendo to bring these characters to life in an animated movie, unlike any film Illumination has made to date,” said Illumination founder Chris Meledandri when announcing the extended cast last month. The film is set to hit theatres in April 2023.
