The Panasonic GH series has long been many amateur (and even pro) filmmakers’ favorite budget camera. Last year, Panasonic unveiled the S1 and S1R, the full-frame counterpart to the Micro Four Thirds GH5, made for photographers and photographer-videographers who were restrained by the smaller sensor. Now, Panasonic releases the S1H for the serious and dedicated videographer. In a lot of ways, the S1H draws from the GH5 series, the standard S1, and even Panasonic’s pro-level cinema cameras like the VariCam.
The first full-frame mirrorless camera to offer 6K, the S1H features 6K/24p, 5.9K/30p (which means that down-sampling to 4K is now possible), and 4K/60p recording. Pixel count is not yet divulged, but it will most likely be 24MP. It also features an impressive 14+ stop dynamic range, 4:3 anamorphic capture, and unlimited recording times. All this, with a modest price tag of approximately $4000, makes the Panasonic S1H a no-brainer for filmmakers. The S1H is scheduled for release later this year.
