TF International Securities analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, who has over 10 years of experience reporting on Apple based on data from the supply chain, has revealed new research about both the 2022 iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max and the 2023 iPhone 15. He, along with other analysts, predicts that the iPhone 14 will feature a 48MP main camera. Although that should not be surprising if you follow iPhone 14 rumors closely — Kuo said the same thing back in April when he predicted that 48MP cameras were headed to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. While this rumor may not be a new one, it would still signal a significant change for Apple which has been partial to its 12MP main cameras since the release of the iPhone 6S. By quadrupling the resolution it would mean sharper photos from next year’s phones as Apple looks to compete with the Google Pixel 6 Pro and its 50MP main camera or the Galaxy S21 Ultra, which boasts a 108MP wide-angle camera.

Kuo also reports that we can expect the 2023 iPhone 15 to include a periscope lens for improved zooms. While many reported that the folded, periscope-like structure would be used in the iPhone 13, it is looking pretty certain that the feature will be included in the 2023 iPhone 15. Periscope lenses address the lack of space in smartphones by stacking lenses vertically. Increasing the amount of zoom on a camera requires a boost for the focal length of a lens. There is only so much room you have to do that on horizontally stacked lenses, but stacking the lenses on top of each other frees up more room. That is why phones like the Galaxy S21 Ultra can deliver a 10x zoom. Apple, which lags behind Samsung’s phones in zoom capabilities, clearly wants to address that, if we are to believe the rumors.
