i-D Explores Korea’s Illegal Tattooing Scene

Cultures around the world have different ideas about self identity, beauty, and individualism. While some cultures cherish and celebrate diversity, we often see Eastern cultures that favor traditionalism and conformity. Although we are all entitled to define our identities in any way we please, some individuals struggle finding their own in certain cultures due to societal norms and expectations.

Part of i-D’s latest video series, tattoo artist Grace Neutral explores the illegal tattooing scene in South Korea while also catching a glimpse of how the younger generation is challenging traditional views about beauty and body image. It’s an interesting look at how a young tattoo artist finds herself in a land where her trade is essentially illegal. Technically tattooing isn’t illegal in Korea, but lawmakers have made it impossible for artists to exercise their trade, driving the artists and the community underground.
